When the louvers are closed, rainwater is channeled into a built-in gutter system that runs through the pergola columns to the ground. When open, the blades allow full sky views and ventilation.

The blades are typically motorized (remote or wall switch control). Manual operation with a crank handle is also available for smaller pergolas or budget-sensitive projects.

Aluminum is the ideal material for louvered pergolas because the blades need to be lightweight for the motor to operate smoothly. A steel blade system would require a much larger (and more expensive) motor.

Wall-Mounted Pergola

A wall-mounted pergola attaches to a building wall on one side, reducing the number of columns needed (typically 2 columns instead of 4).

This is a cost-effective option for smaller gardens or terraces where space is limited. The wall attachment must be structurally sound — a qualified local contractor should assess whether the wall can support the load.
